Frizzy hair is a foe so many have to deal with. No matter how long you spend taming your mane, there are days when your hair will just have its own ideas. Not even your hair extensions will toe the line. And if you have fine hair - forget it! When the rain and humidity hit, all you’ll be asking is how to make your hair less frizzy. Let us discuss.

Why Does Hair Frizz?

So what causes frizzy hair anyway? Technically, frizzy hair occurs when the outer layer of your hair - the cuticle - is dry and rough. Parched for moisture, as soon as it finds it, it grabs it, causing the hair to swell.

This makes humid environments the worst. Mist, sweat, drizzle: any kind of moisture can take your hairstyle from sleek to bleak in minutes.

Taming The Frizz

Someone with years of experience waging the Battle of The Frizz is celebrity stylist and Voël Natural Hair Extensions creator, Kim Gueldner. In this blog post, she shares her favorite hair treatments, tips, and products that will stop your hair from behaving badly in humid conditions and put you back in charge of your look.

Kim’s Guide to No-Frizz Freedom

  1. Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo

Whether your hair is straight or curly, this Olapex shampoo is a great first line of defense against frizz. I’m a fan because of the way it works, re-linking the broken bonds to repair dry and damaged cuticles and making your hair stronger and smoother from the outset. I always use this as a first step to combatting frizzy hair.

  2. Brazilian Blowout

If you need to give your hair a serious defrizz, Brazilian Blowout keratin treatment is one of the best hair treatments for frizzy hair - especially if you regularly blowdry your hair and expose it to possible heat damage.

For days when the frizz is really crazy, you can even apply just a small amount to your hairline and it will bring your hair back under control.

  3. For Natural Curls and Waves, Air or Towel Dry

If you wear your hair naturally curly or wavy, the best is to air dry your hair rather than blowdrying it. Air and towel drying avoids unnecessary damage to the cuticle and sets the stage for your curls to come to life. Air drying is also the best way to keep your natural hair extensions in good condition and long-lasting.

  4. Living Proof Cream

The first step after towel drying your hair is to apply some product to protect it. I always say “You wouldn’t go outside without putting moisturizer on your face, the same should go for your hair.” Also, if you don’t coat it with something, your hair will quickly end up a frizzy mess.

I like Living Proof’s No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream. For extra protection, you can also try their Humidity Shield spray.

  5. Steer Clear of Leave-In Conditioners

It may seem contrary to logic, but leave-in conditioners actually tend to frizz the hair rather than keep it smooth. This is because they contain humectants that promote moisture retention, which in humid conditions, of course, means frizz. Therefore, my advice would be to give them a miss as much as possible.

  6. Wash Your Hair Less

My final tip would be to wash your hair less frequently. Freshly-washed fly-away hair is absolutely a magnet for humidity, whereas the more your hair is weighed down, the less frizzy it will be.

Just as wearing extensions takes a little extra care and attention, so does achieving a frizz-free style, but the rewards far outway the effort. With these simple tips from Kim, you’ll be styling out winter like a pro.
